Sunfest 2008

On Wednesday August 28 I was invited to go to Sunfest, held in Denver at the Coors Field parking lot. I was a guest of Allied Building Supply, thanks Pam Simmons, Gregg Chostner and Jake Walker.

This solar event was the place to meet like minded people, visit with company representatives and enjoy the day. Despite the fact that the DNC was nominating Barack Obama the traffic inside the event was good and the traffic on the roads was also good. I went around passing out my business cards and explaining to the people I met why they should have an Ecobroker on speed dial. Much to my surprise approx ½ of the people I spoke to had heard of Realtors who were also Ecobrokers. One had even attended the Ecobroker event this summer at the Colorado Convention Center.

Some of the vendors at Sunfest:

  • Solargreen and Jim Paulson
  • Metro Solar Inc and Dave Woycio
  • Starfire Energy and Joe Abeach
  • Capitol Solar Energy, llc and Laurent Meillon
  • Coseia (Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association) Beth Hart
  • Independent Power Systems and Craig Konz
  • Golden Solar and Mark Romano
  • Standard Renewable Energy and Eric Van Orden

    Vestas is coming to Pueblo

Vestas is a Danish company is words largest wind sorce company. They will be producing the worlds largest wind tower factory right here in Pueblo! The plant will cost approx $240 Million dollars and employ over 500 people. They also plan on putting plants in Windsor (blades) and Brighton Colorado (turbines).

To Pueblo as well as most of the front range this means jobs, houses and hopefully a boost to our economy. Pueblo has a steady work force, the new concrete plant and the steal mill to help support Vestas. Our Governor Ritter promised to help making Colorado Green and this is part of the plan.

As the first Ecobroker in Southern Colorado I was especially excited to hear this news for all the obvious reasons. Congratulations to all involved, the community can't wait to get started!

    Trash Talk

    Trash Talk

I want to talk about trash! Three months ago I cancelled my trash service. I live in a rural community and the trash service is private and expensive. With the price of fuel the inevitable was going to happen (again) the price of my service was due to up. Personally, I put so little trash out it just wasn't worth the price for what little I put out.

At a our recent neighborhood pot luck I discovered many of my neighbors were either thinking of cancelling their service or already had. We talked about pooling together and getting one of those large trash containers. I offered to house the container on my property since my property runs the length of our dirt road. But talk turned to recycling.

For the 3 months that I haven't had trash service I've been trying to recycle. Ya know what? It's really working out well. Even with my recent cleaning binge the recycling is just working.

Here's what's working for me recycling wise:

Recycling Plastics in Fremont County Colorado happens 4 times a year at the County fairgrounds.

Soda cans and the like go to the Humane Society and the money goes to the lost pets.

Bottles go into the recycle containers around town, specifically in front of the grocery stores

Paper including junk mail, catalogs and magazines go into the recycle center in front of Sonny's hardware store.

Food scraps go into 2 piles. One pile is vegetable based and will decompose for compost. The other pile including bones, egg shells and some yard waste go into a burn pile.

Cleaning Binge: I've made 3 trips to local charities for the things that can be used again. I'm 8 miles from town so all of the above items go when I'm going the appropriate direction.

The various trash services are going to keep driving down my road whether I need them or not, so the pollution factor really does come into play here. But maybe one day all my neighbors will do this and the trash truck can just skip us and make fewer trips.

    Hey, I'm over here!

I've been blogging on Active Rain since almost the very beginning. I didn't know anything about SEO, tags or key words. But I enjoyed learning, the process of doing the posts and most of all getting the phone to ring. And I'm still learning this ever developing craft. I'm still amazed when the phone rings and the voice on the other end is a mortgage lender from San Diego asking me about my Talking House post or when a potential buyer calls asking about a specific property. Blogging is truly a great tool and I'm ever grateful to the A.R. gods for this opportunity.

Colorado is a Hail of a place!

Colorado is one "hail" of a place. Pun intended. With the huge demand for roofing in our area due to the hail storms, high winds and tornados. I see dump truck after dump truck of shingles being torn off roofs to make way for the new shingles; I have often thought about the fact that there has to be a way to recycle those old shingles instead of putting them into the landfills. Pueblo currently has an even larger problem with the closure of one major landfill and dump fees sky rocketing along with the cost of shingles. I am very happy to see a company that has found a way to recycle those old shingles. They grind them up and mix them into their hot-mix asphalt for paving. Wow, think about this you could be driving on your old roof. Let's hope they got all the nails. This company is offering reduced rates for dumping to make it attractive to roofing contractors to come to them.

The only unfortunate side to this story is that this particular company is in Henderson, CO and it is the only one in Colorado that I am aware of recycling shingles, however, it is a huge step in the right direction, let's hope other companies see the benefit of this and will bring the process closer to our area. According to an article in the August 2008, Colorado Roofing Association Newsletter 95% of all roofing material waste goes into the landfills along with pre-consumer waste, they are talking approximately 9 million tons of waste annually going into our landfills. Factor in the cost of asphalt and recycling makes even more sense than just reducing waste.

Kudos to Gary Stillmunkes, of Asphalt Specialties Company, inc., in Henderson, CO. The world could use more innovative companies like you!
